Systemic Safety Culture

Systemic Safety Culture

In recent years, discussions about the implementation of a Safety Culture, aka. Culture of Safety have been vogue. The Rapid Response Institute has been on the vanguard of this industry transformation.

We recognize that in critical infrastructure sectors much of field operations work products are accomplished by contractors and their subcontractors (the organizational ecosystems).

Working with key industry players, we have developed a suit of deliverables that directly address these emerging needs. This systemic approach addresses the full field operations process including:

  • Human, Process, Environment Interfaces
  • Holistic Model
  • Linkages are Weak Points (Including Supply Chain)
  • Real Time Systems (Smart Equipment)
  • Appropriate Human Training
  • Human Factors & Behavioral Economics

Systemic Safety Culture as the Core Set of Values and Behavioral Economics of ALL participants of the extended organization and its Enterprise Risk Management strategy that reflect a Strong Bond Governance commitment to behaving as a High Reliability Enterprise Ecosystem in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Characteristics of a Robust Safety Culture

Nine Tenets

  1. Leadership
  2. Problem Identification and Resolution
  3. Personal Accountability
  4. Work Processes
  5. Continuous Learning
  6. An Environment for Raising Concerns
  7. Effective Communications
  8. Trust and Respect
  9. Inquiring Attitude

In a culture of safety, people are not merely encouraged to work toward change; they take action when it is needed.  Inaction in the face of safety problems is taboo, and eventually the pressure comes from all directions — from peers as well as leaders. There is no room in a culture of safety for those who uselessly point fingers or say, “Safety is not my responsibility, so I’ll file a report and wash my hands of it.”

— Institute for Healthcare Improvement

It is common practice for parties to refer to a singular industry ‘Safety Culture.’  In reality since each organization has its own culture, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of Safety Cultures in any critical infrastructure sector.

This is important consideration when transforming to a Systemic Safety Culture.

Featured Safety Culture Deliverables

The Rapid Response Institute has codified a suite of solutions developed with and for organizations in critical infrastructure sectors. Moreover, the full suite of solutions support these featured deliverables.  Checkout our book, Implementing a Culture of Safety.

Transformation

The transformation of an organization to a Safety Culture/High Reliability Management is an ongoing journey not a single change event. We provide a full set of tools including change management, workshops as well as software enabling tools.

Workshops

This is an assessment of the organization’s level of compliance with relevant regulations.  This metric and its moving average provide insight into the level of tolerance management has for accepting regulatory citations and fines.

Cross Cultural

It is important to recognize that many cross cultural engagements are required on a daily basis to "collaboratively" address a Safety Culture environment. Our online Cross Culture Serious Game addresses not just global cultural diversity but the cultural diversity within the the ecosystem.

Maturity

The overall level of in an organization's Safety Culture is that of the least maturity of any supplier on a project. Our Safety Culture Maturity Model is a Risk Management tool organizations can use to evaluate their own firm as well as the ecosystem.

Operations Management Systerm

For over a decade, we have provided Operations Management Systems (OMS) that integrates supply chain workflow tasks with owner/operation polices and regulatory requirements. Our Cloud based solution will soon include an Augmented Reality capability as well as incorporating IoT.

Systemic Safety Inex

Many organizations in critical infrastructure sectors have significant operational challenges which can dramatically increase risk. Commodity price points, sector restructuring etc can all negatively impact the ability of a firm to sustain a Safety Culture. Our SSI tool can provide insight into the actual readiness of a supplier.
